Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • ½ green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

For the Filling & Topping:

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (seasoned to taste, made ahead)
  • 1½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

For the Brown Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Prep the Patties:

In a large bowl, combine all the steak patty ingredients. Mix well using your hands or a spatula until evenly incorporated. Divide the mixture into 6–8 portions. Form each into a thick patty and press a shallow well into the center to create a beef “bowl.”

2️⃣ Stuff & Bake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Arrange the patties on a lined baking sheet or in a large casserole dish.
  3. Spoon a generous amount of mashed potatoes into each patty well.
  4. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 20–25 minutes.
  6. Uncover and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until the beef is fully cooked and the cheese is bubbly and golden.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy:

While the steaks are baking, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Whisk in flour to make a roux and cook for 1–2 minutes until golden. Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, season with salt and pepper, and simmer until thickened to your liking.

4️⃣ Serve It Up:

Place each loaded patty on a plate, drizzle generously with brown gravy, and sprinkle with fresh parsley. Serve with warm dinner rolls, croissants, or even a crisp green salad for balance.

Pro Tips & Variations:

  • Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Elevate the flavor by mixing roasted garlic or chives into your mash.
  • Spicy Twist: Add a pinch of cayenne or sub some of the cheddar with pepper jack for a bold kick.
  • Make Ahead: Prep the patties and mashed potatoes in advance for an easier dinner rush.
