Southern Chocolate Cobbler Recipe

Ingredients

For the Batter:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Topping:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Melt Butter: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven until melted. Remove and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Batter: In a bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and vanilla extract. Spoon the batter over the melted butter, but do not stir.
  3. Add the Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  4. Pour Boiling Water: Carefully pour the boiling water over the topping mixture. Do not stir.
  5. Bake: Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the top has set. The bottom will be loose and gooey.
  6. Cool & Serve: Let cool for 15 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
