Ingredients
French Toast Base:
- 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 can (15 oz) sliced peaches in syrup, drained
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
Crumb Topping:
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ cup cold butter, cubed
Instructions
1. Prepare the French Toast Base
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread the cubed French bread evenly into the dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.
- Pour this custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all pieces are soaked. Gently press the bread down to help it absorb.
2. Add the Peaches
- Scatter the drained peach slices across the top of the soaked bread.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the peaches and sprinkle with nutmeg.
3. Make the Crumb Topping
- In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
- Cut in the cold butter with a fork or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the topping over the entire dish.
4. Bake
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set.
5. Serve
- Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
- Add a drizzle of maple syrup, a scoop of whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar for an extra sweet finish.
Recipe Notes
- Make-Ahead Friendly: Assemble the night before, cover, and refrigerate. Just bake in the morning!
- Fresh Peaches? Yes please! Use 2–3 fresh sliced peaches when in season.
- Add Crunch: A sprinkle of chopped pecans or granola on top adds a nice texture.
