Mochi Pizza Recipe

Mochi Pizza is a fun and delicious fusion dish that combines the chewy texture of mochi with the savory flavors of pizza. This unique recipe uses a mochi crust instead of traditional dough, resulting in a crispy, chewy base that’s perfect for holding your favorite pizza toppings.

Ingredients

For the Mochi Crust:

  • 1 cup sweet rice flour (mochiko flour)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for extra crispiness)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for greasing the pan)

For the Toppings:

  • 1/4 cup pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • Your favorite pizza toppings (e.g., pepperoni, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, onions, basil, etc.)
  • Olive oil for drizzling (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Mochi Crust

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sweet rice flour, water, sugar, cornstarch (if using), and salt until smooth and lump-free.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, for about 5-7 minutes, or until the mixture thickens into a sticky, dough-like consistency. It will begin to pull away from the sides of the pan as it thickens.
  3. Once thickened, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 2: Form the Mochi Pizza Base

  1. Lightly grease a 9-inch pizza pan or a baking sheet with vegetable oil.
  2. Transfer the mochi mixture to the pan. Use a spatula or wet hands to spread it evenly into a circular or square shape, about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 3: Bake the Mochi Crust

  1. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust turns slightly golden and crispy around the edges.

Step 4: Add Pizza Toppings

  1. Remove the crust from the oven and spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over it.
  2. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese over the sauce, then add your favorite toppings.
  3. Return the pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.

Step 5: Finish and Serve

  1. Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing.
  2. Drizzle with olive oil and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Tips

  • Use Sweet Rice Flour: Ensure you use sweet rice flour (mochiko) and not regular rice flour for the perfect chewy texture.
  • Get Extra Crispiness: If you prefer a crispier crust, broil the pizza for the last 1-2 minutes of cooking.
  • Customize Toppings: Try different toppings like BBQ chicken, pineapple, or smoked salmon for a unique twist.
  • Make it Vegan: Use vegan cheese and plant-based toppings for a dairy-free alternative.

Mochi Pizza is a fun and creative twist on the classic pizza, with the chewy mochi crust providing a unique and satisfying base. Enjoy experimenting with different toppings and flavors for your very own personalized pizza!
