Indulge in this rich and creamy potato gratin, layered with garlic-infused cream, melted Gruyère, and a golden, crispy top. The perfect side dish for any meal!

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes (about 4-5 medium potatoes)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing the dish)
  • 2 teaspoons salt (divided)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or a blend of Gruyère and cheddar)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Prepare the potatoes
Peel the potatoes (optional, leaving the skin on adds extra texture) and slice them thinly, about 1/8-inch thick. A mandoline slicer can help achieve even slices for perfect layering.
  3. Make the cream mixture
In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once it simmers, remove from heat.
  4. Layer the potatoes
Arrange a layer of potato slices in the greased baking dish, slightly overlapping each other. Pour about 1/4 of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with 1/4 of the shredded Gruyère cheese.
  5. Repeat the layers
Continue layering the potatoes, pouring more cream mixture and adding cheese until all ingredients are used. Finish with a generous layer of cheese on top.
  6. Bake the gratin
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 30-45 minutes, until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork and the top is golden and bubbling.
  7. Finish the dish
For a crispier top, broil the gratin for 2-3 minutes, but keep an eye on it to avoid burning.
  8. Serve
Let the gratin cool for a few minutes before serving. Optionally, sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the top for an extra burst of flavor.

Enjoy this creamy, cheesy, and golden potato gratin as the perfect comfort food side for any occasion!
