Creamy Baked Custard

This easy baked custard recipe is creamy, smooth, and lightly sweetened. Made with simple ingredients, it’s the perfect classic dessert for any occasion.


Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole or 2% milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • (Optional) Ground nutmeg or cinnamon for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Heat your oven to 325°F (160°C) and grease a baking dish or ramekins.
  2. Warm the Milk: Heat milk and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Avoid boiling.
  3. Whisk the Eggs: In a bowl, beat the eggs, vanilla, and salt together.
  4. Temper the Eggs: Slowly mix a bit of the warm milk into the eggs, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
  5. Combine & Pour: Stir the egg mixture back into the warm milk, then pour into the prepared dish(es).
  6. Water Bath: Place the dish in a larger pan, filling the outer pan with hot water halfway up the sides.
  7. Bake: Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until set but slightly jiggly in the center.
  8. Cool & Chill: Let cool, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Garnish with nutmeg or cinnamon if desired.
