Classic Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Juicy, pan-seared beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy—this cozy comfort food is the perfect dinner when you’re craving something hearty and homemade. Serve it over mashed potatoes or buttery egg noodles for the ultimate nostalgic meal.

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder (optional, use if not adding onions to the gravy)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 2 cups beef broth, divided
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ketchup
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

1. Caramelize the Onions (Optional but Delicious!)

If using onions, heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until golden brown and caramelized, about 7–8 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

2. Make the Beef Patties

In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder (if not using real onions). Divide the mixture into 3–4 equal portions and shape into oval patties. Press a small indent into the center of each to help them cook evenly and prevent puffing.

3. Cook the Salisbury Steaks

Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 5–6 minutes per side, or until deeply browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F). Transfer to a plate and tent loosely with foil.

4. Prepare the Gravy

In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the flour and 1 cup of the beef broth until smooth.

Drain most of the fat from the skillet, leaving about 3–4 tablespoons. Let the pan cool slightly, then pour in the remaining 1 cup of beef broth. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.

Slowly whisk in the flour-broth mixture, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and salt to taste.

5. Finish the Gravy

Continue to whisk until the gravy thickens, about 2–3 minutes. Stir in the caramelized onions if using.

6. Simmer & Serve

Return the cooked patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the top and let them simmer together for 3–4 minutes so the flavors meld.

Serve hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice, and drizzle with plenty of that savory onion gravy.
