Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice, let sit 5 min)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or hot coffee (coffee deepens the chocolate flavor!)

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk (plus more if needed)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, or line the bottoms with parchment paper for easy removal.

2. Make the Cake Batter

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Add the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
Slowly stir in the hot water or coffee — the batter will be thin, and that’s exactly what makes this cake ultra moist!

3. Bake

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool completely before frosting.

4. Make the Chocolate Frosting

Beat the softened butter until creamy.
Add the cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and a pinch of salt.
Beat on medium speed until fluffy and smooth. If the frosting is too thick, add a splash of milk; if too thin, add more powdered sugar.

5. Frost and Assemble

Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting on top.
Add the second layer and frost the top and sides.
Decorate with sprinkles, chocolate curls, or keep it simply elegant!

Storage Tips

  • Room Temperature: Keep covered for up to 2 days.
