Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks:
- 1 lb (500 g) ground beef (80% lean)
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ⅓ cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- ⅓ cup tomato sauce or marinara
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
- Salt, to taste
For the Mushroom Gravy:
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 9 oz (250 g) white mushrooms, sliced
- 2 ½ cups low sodium beef broth
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tbsp cornstarch, mixed with ¼ cup water (or broth)
- Salt and pepper, as needed
Instructions
1. Make the Salisbury Steaks
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, diced onion, garlic, Panko, egg, tomato sauce, mustard, Worcestershire, oregano, black pepper, and salt until just combined. Don’t overmix.
Shape into 4–5 oval patties.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet). Remove and set aside.
2. Prepare the Mushroom Gravy
In the same skillet, add vegetable oil, then sauté the sliced onion and mushrooms over medium heat until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
Stir in the beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer.
Whisk in the cornstarch slurry and stir until the gravy thickens, about 2–3 minutes.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Simmer the Steaks
Return the patties to the skillet with the gravy. Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, or until fully cooked through and infused with flavor.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve with mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or buttered egg noodles.
- Add a side of green peas, roasted carrots, or sautéed green beans for a classic plate.
Storage
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop with a splash of broth if needed.
