Crazy Crust Pie

A magically easy pie that makes its own crust while it bakes!
🥧✨ Fruity, fluffy, and totally fun!

If you’ve never made a Crazy Crust Pie, you’re in for a treat! This old-fashioned gem is a dessert dream—no rolling pin, no pie crust fuss, and all the comfort of a bubbling fruit pie baked in a tender, cakey base. Just whip up the batter, plop in your favorite canned pie filling, and let the oven do the rest. The edges puff up golden, the center gets gooey and jammy, and every bite is pure homemade joy!

📝 Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Âź cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup butter or margarine, softened
  • ž cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 can (21 oz / ~600 g) fruit pie filling of your choice
(cherry, apple, blueberry, peach, blackberry—go wild!)
  • Cinnamon-sugar (if using apple or peach filling)
  • Sugar, for sprinkling

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat & Prep

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease a 9-inch pie plate and set it aside.

2️⃣ Mix the Crazy Batter

In a large bowl, combine:

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Softened butter
  • Milk
  • Egg

Beat the mixture until smooth and well combined—it should look like a pourable cake batter.

3️⃣ Pour & Fill

Pour the batter into the prepared pie dish and spread it evenly to the edges.
Spoon the fruit pie filling into the center of the batter, leaving about 1 inch of space around the edge. Do not stir—this separation is what creates that magical “crust” effect.

4️⃣ Sprinkle & Bake

If you’re using apple or peach filling, sprinkle the top with a touch of cinnamon-sugar. For other flavors, just a little plain sugar will do.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the batter is fully set.

5️⃣ Cool & Serve

Let the pie cool slightly before slicing—it’s lovely warm, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for that classic diner vibe.
  • Top with Greek yogurt or whipped cream for a cozy breakfast treat.
  • Try different fillings throughout the year—cherry for Valentine’s Day, peach in summer, or spiced apple in fall!
